Mac Applications – How to download and use Tor Browser Bundle in Mac OS

In this Mac Applications tutorial, we will show you how to download and use the Mac OS Tor Browser

The talk of privacy in the digital era is not a new topic. It is no surprise that users are becoming far more concerned about their privacy and the way software companies manage our data. Some people prefer their browsing activities to be kept confidential, prompting users to look for new and innovative ways to remain safe.

The TOR protects your privacy by bouncing outward and inward communications around a distributed network of relays and nodes.  These nodes are run by volunteers all around the world and thus prevents outsiders from monitoring your Internet activity.

TOR will also prevent the sites you visit from gaining knowledge of your private data, such as your physical location, letting you access web sites that are blocked in your country.

Learnmac.org prepared this tutorial to help our users set up the Mac OS Tor Browser

  1. First click the link below to go The TOR Project’s download page (as a pro-tip, make sure the website has a secure HTTP certificate https://www.torproject.org/projects/torbrowser.html
  2. Download the correct file for your Mac OS version (32 or 64-bit).
  3. After the file has finished, click on it, you will see a .dmg file. Drag the included file into your Mac’s Applications folder.
  4. If done correctly, you will see the “Tor Browser” Application which you can pin to your dock.
  5. After you run the “Tor Browser” app, it will open in a new window, establishing the correct connections to the global TOR network relay.
  6. If everything goes as it should, you will be prompted with a message highlighted in green saying “Connected to the Tor network!” and a new browser window will pop up.

Here at learnmac.org we care about what our users have to say. Do you think online privacy matters? Do you have a tutorial you’d like to see on the blog? Tell us in the comments below!
